MATERNITY

Our community midwife provides maternity care in conjunction with all the doctors. Please arrange to see one of the doctors soon after you realise that you may be pregnant.

CHILD HEALTH AND IMMUNISATION

The wellbeing of your child is catered for with regular developmental health checks being performed by the health visitor and doctor on a regular basis. Full immunisation is recommended for all pre-school children and this is carried out by our practice nurse.

TRAVEL IMMUNISATIONS/VACCINATIONS

Please note, when dialling from abroad you must use the following international dialing number: +44870 11 14 512

Please make an appointment at least eight weeks in advance of your holiday to ensure adequate cover. Our practice nurses will be able to advise on the health aspects of foreign travel, with particular emphasis on vaccinations and malaria protection. A charge will be made for certain immunisations and vaccinations which are not covered by the NHS. A list of these charges is held at reception. MASTA can provide you with a “Health Brief” which gives information about immunisations and malaria as well as any Foreign Office advice and the latest health news. To obtain a Health Brief, simply telephone the number below and leave your name, address and travel details.

They will then send your Health Brief by first class post which you can take to your doctor or any British Airways Travel Clinic (call 0870 2416843 for nearest clinic).

NHS DIRECT - 24 HOUR HELPINE- 0845 4647

Website: www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk

The NHS has a 24-hour confidential helpline, staffed by nurses and trained operators. NHS Direct will give you immediate information and friendly advice concerning any health problem or anxiety you may have regarding your health.

They also have details of other relevant health information services, late night pharmacists and out-of-hours dentists - all in your area.

Calls are charged at local rates. As in the case of 999 calls, all calls are recorded.

MENINGITIS HELPLINE

Symptoms in adults MAY include vomiting, fever, headache, stiff neck, light aversion, drowsiness, joint pain and fitting. Some bacteria that cause meningitis can also cause septicaemia (blood poisoning). Septicaemia can develop quickly. The spots or bruises do not turn white when pressed. The rash must be taken seriously - a doctor should be called immediately.

All patients aged 24 years and under are advised to have a meningitis C vaccination.

Please contact the practice for further details.

National Meningitis Help Line 0808 800 3344 (24 hour).

FLU VACCINATION

An influenza vaccination is particularly recommended for patients with heart, lung, kidney or chronic liver disease, diabetes and residents of nursing and residential homes. In addition, patients who are the main carer for an elderly or disabled person whose welfare may be at risk if the carer falls ill are also encouraged to attend for a flu vaccination. Please check with the doctor or nurse each September/October whether you should be immunised and an appointment will be arranged. If you are unable to attend the surgery a home visit will be arranged. A pneumococcal immunisation programme is available to those aged 65 and over. This helps protect against pneumococcal infection which can cause diseases such as pneumonia, septicaemia (blood poisoning) and meningitis.

YELLOW FEVER VACCINATIONS

Friar Gate Surgery is an authorised Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre.

THE ELDERLY

If you are aged 75 years or over, you should be seen annually either by your doctor, the practice nurse, district nurse or health visitor. This can be arranged at the surgery or, alternatively, a home visit will be arranged if needs dictate.

MINOR SURGERY

Certain procedures, done under local anaesthetic, are carried out at the surgery, thereby negating the long wait for hospital appointments. In addition, the treatment of warts and verrucas is available at the surgery.

Please ask your doctor about these services

SICKNESS CERTIFICATES

You do not require a doctor's certificate for any illness lasting seven days or less. Your employer may ask you to complete a self certification form (SC2) which is available from your employer. For any illness lasting longer than seven days you will need to see the doctor for issue of a med3 sickness certificate.
